Forestry Mulcher Rental in Pecos, TX

Reeves County clearing is oilfield clearing plus river bottom, and both are on somebody’s clock. We rent forestry mulchers into Pecos for pad sites, lease roads and salt cedar work along the river, and run turnkey crews when the schedule leaves no room to hire.

What we clear around Pecos

Reeves County is Chihuahuan Desert country for the most part — creosote, tarbush, mesquite and catclaw over caliche, with very little of the continuous woody cover you find further east. On a lot of upland Permian Basin tracts the clearing job is thinner and faster than what the same acreage would take in South Texas.

The exception is the river. The Pecos River bottom and the irrigated ground around it carry a very different problem: dense honey mesquite and, above all, salt cedar. Tamarisk forms thickets along the river corridor that are among the heaviest material in the region, and clearing it is a recurring job because it resprouts and re-seeds aggressively. Anyone who tells you one pass ends salt cedar has not worked on the Pecos.

The third driver is straightforward: the Permian Basin is the busiest oilfield in the country, and pads, lease roads, tank batteries and gathering corridors all need brush taken to grade on a rig schedule.

Caliche, salt cedar and rig dates

For oilfield work in Reeves County the deciding factor is turnaround, not difficulty. A high-horsepower dedicated mulcher — Barko 930B, Tigercat M726G or Weiler M860A — clears a pad and its approach in a fraction of the time and is the machine to book when several sites need to be ready in the same window. On the salt cedar work along the river it is not really a choice at all: tamarisk thickets are heavy, continuous material and the smaller machines will not hold a production rate in them.

The CAT 275 XE is the right machine for a single small pad, trimming an existing lease road, or work around facilities where you need to be selective. It rents by the day at $1,750 and moves on a standard trailer, so a one-day job does not carry a lowboy charge. Given how far Reeves County is from most equipment, transport is a bigger share of total cost here than almost anywhere else in the state — factor it in before you choose.

Rent the machine, or hire it done

Reeves County is the market where transport most often decides the answer. A short rental with a long haul in both directions can cost more than turnkey does, and combining several sites into one mobilisation frequently saves more than any rate negotiation would. Operators running continuous Permian work rent monthly and keep the machine out here. The rent vs hire guide explains the trade.

Pecos and Reeves County questions

Yes, and it is one of the better tools for it — mulching takes a tamarisk thicket down to a chip layer without the burn piles that other methods leave along a river corridor. Understand that salt cedar resprouts and re-seeds vigorously, so a mechanical pass is the start of a programme, not the end of one. Landowners on the Pecos generally pair it with follow-up treatment; your NRCS field office can advise on what that looks like on your reach of the river.

More than most markets, and we would rather be direct about it than surprise you. Transport is quoted from wherever the machine sits when you book, and West Texas hauls are long. Two things reduce it: booking when a machine is already working in the Permian, and combining several sites into a single mobilisation. The transport guide explains how the quoting works.

Yes. High-horsepower turnkey is $4,000 a day plus transport for an eight-hour day; skid steer turnkey is $3,000 a day with transport included. On Permian work turnkey often wins outright because operator availability out here is tight and the rig date is not negotiable.

Rock contact wears teeth much faster than wood does, and shallow caliche is unforgiving. An experienced operator works slightly proud of grade to manage it. On a rental you carry that responsibility, so if your operator has not run a mulching head on shallow ground before, talk to us first — or take turnkey and let it be our problem.

Pecos, Barstow, Balmorhea, Fort Stockton, Monahans, Kermit and Wink all sit within the same West Texas dispatch as Odessa and Midland.

If you have more than one site out here, tell us all of them. One mobilisation covering several is much cheaper.
