The sticker comparison
A mid-size dedicated mulcher rents for $11,000/week. Our high-HP turnkey service runs $4,000 per 8-hour day plus transport: call it $20,000+ for a week. Skid steer turnkey is $3,000/day including transport. On paper, rental looks like half price. Sometimes it is. Often it isn’t.
What the rental sticker leaves out
- Your operator’s wage: and more importantly, their skill. A mulcher-experienced operator produces two to three times what a first-timer does. If your operator has run excavators but never a forestry head, your first rental week is partly a training week you’re paying $11,000 for.
- Fuel. Dedicated mulchers under load burn serious diesel, budget hundreds of dollars per working day.
- Insurance. Rentals require inland marine coverage ($250K–$500K depending on class) plus $2M general liability. If you don’t carry it, your agent can usually add it, but it’s cost and lead time. Details here.
- Transport. Quoted by distance; heavy-haul for the big machines. Transport guide.
- Risk. On a rental, weather days, breakdowns from operator error, and slow production are your problem. On turnkey, production risk is ours.

What turnkey buys
One number covers machine, operator, fuel, maintenance, and (on skid steer service) transport. Our operators run these exact machines every week, they know how hard to push a head in wet mesquite and how to leave a finish the landowner photographs. A high-HP turnkey day reliably clears 3–5+ acres; there is no learning curve on your dime.
The break-even, worked
Case 1: 40 acres of cedar, contractor with an experienced operator. Rental: two weeks mid-size at $22,000 + fuel + transport ≈ $26–28K. Turnkey high-HP: ~10 days at $4,000 ≈ $40K + transport. Rental wins by a wide margin, this is exactly who our rental program is for.
Case 2: same 40 acres, no experienced operator. Realistic rental production drops toward half; the job stretches to 3–4 weeks: $33–44K plus fuel, plus the risk you hand back a machine with abused wear parts. Turnkey wins, and finishes sooner.
Case 3: 6-acre residential cleanup. Skid steer rental at $1,750/day for ~5 days ≈ $8,750 + your labor + towing. Turnkey skid steer: ~4 days × $3,000 = $12,000, transport included, zero effort. Close call, comes down to whether your time is better spent elsewhere.
