Insurance Requirements for Forestry Mulcher Rentals, Explained
Insurance is the paperwork step that delays more rentals than any other, almost always because it started too late. Here’s exactly what we require, why, and how to have certificates ready before your dates.

The requirements
| Machine class | Inland marine (rented equipment) | General liability |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated mulchers (high-HP and mid-size) | $500,000 | $2,000,000 |
| CAT 275 XE skid steer | $250,000 | $2,000,000 |
Certificates must name Pierce Equipment Rentals as loss payee and additional insured before the machine ships. Turnkey service customers skip all of this, it’s our machine and our crew.
What each coverage actually does
Inland marine (rented/leased equipment coverage)
Despite the name, nothing to do with water, it’s the coverage that follows equipment that moves. It protects the machine itself against theft, fire, rollover, and damage while it’s in your care, custody, and control. A dedicated mulcher is a half-million-dollar machine working in remote locations; this is the coverage that makes handing you the keys possible.
General liability
Covers damage the work does to third parties, a thrown object through a windshield, mulch fire spread, damage to a neighbor’s fence. $2M is the standard limit commercial GCs and utilities require of their subs anyway, so most working contractors already carry it.
How to get it done fast
- Already carry a contractor’s policy? Your agent adds rented-equipment coverage and issues a COI, often same-day. Send them our requirements and your rental dates, that’s usually the whole process.
- No existing policy? Short-term rented-equipment policies exist through specialty markets. Start a week ahead; two is better.
- Certificate holder details: we’ll send exact wording with your quote so the COI is right the first time.
Common snags
- Stated value too low. The inland marine limit must meet the minimum for the class, $500K covers any dedicated machine in our fleet.
- Additional insured missing. The most common re-issue. Ask for both loss payee and additional insured up front.
- Waiting until delivery week. If underwriting asks questions, days evaporate. Insurance starts when the quote is accepted, not when the truck is loaded.
Rule of thumb: the day you book the machine is the day you email your insurance agent.
Questions about whether your policy qualifies? Call 512-601-6981: we read COIs every week and can usually spot the gap in one look.
If your agent pushes back on any of this, the Texas Department of Insurance is the authority on what Texas carriers must disclose and how to confirm a policy is in force. It is also where to check that a carrier is licensed in Texas before you rely on a certificate it issued.
Don't want to run it yourself? Ask about turnkey.
Every rental quote comes with a turnkey option: our machine, our operator, our fuel. High-HP dedicated mulching runs $4,000/day + transport (3–5+ acres/day); skid steer service is $3,000/day including transport. One call prices both so you can compare real numbers: 512-601-6981. Or read the rent vs hire break-even.

Dedicated forestry mulchers clear 3–6× more per day than skid steers. When each platform actually makes sense, with honest numbers.
Both are dedicated mulchers. One costs $3,000 more per week. Here’s exactly what that buys, and when it’s worth it.
Rental looks cheaper until you price operator skill, burned rental days, and wear parts. The real break-even between renting and turnkey service.
