High HP vs Mid Size Dedicated Mulchers: Where the Extra Money Goes

The jump from a mid-size dedicated mulcher to a high-horsepower machine is $3,000 a week. Sometimes that’s the best money on the project. Sometimes it’s wasted. The difference is knowable in advance.

Article hero, High HP vs Mid Size Dedicated Mulchers: Where the Extra Money Goes

What the classes actually are

Our mid-size dedicated fleet: Primetech PT-175, CMI 175, Fecon 150: runs in the 150–175 HP class at $11,000/week. The high-HP fleet: Barko 930B, Tigercat M726G, Weiler M860A: runs from 260 HP to the Weiler M860A’s 375, at $14,000/week.

Three things the extra horsepower buys

1. Stem size without stalling

Mid-size machines are limited to material up to 12″ in diameter; the high-HP class has no practical limit. In 4–6″ cedar, both classes eat steadily. In 10–12″+ material, the mid-size machine works: back-drag, re-approach, feather the head. The high-HP machine simply pushes through, keeping rotor speed under loads that stall smaller machines. In heavy mature stands the production gap widens well past the on-paper numbers.

2. Acres per day, sustained

Mid-size: 1.5–3 acres/day. High-HP: 3–5+. Over a four-week job that’s the difference between 40 acres and 90. On big tracts, cost per acre, the number your customer actually pays, is lowest on the biggest machine.

3. Schedule insurance

Solar sites, pipeline spreads, and development pads carry hard civil deadlines. When the follow-on trades are scheduled, a machine that clears twice as much per day is cheap insurance against liquidated damages.

Where mid-size wins

  • Transport. Mid-size machines move on a standard lowboy, no oversize permits on most routes, faster mobilization, meaningfully cheaper hauls. The high-HP fleet needs heavy-haul RGN service and permitted loads.
  • Footprint and finesse. Selective clearing around keep-trees, fence lines, and structures favors the smaller carrier. The Fecon 150 in particular leaves an estate-quality finish.
  • Project scale. On smaller tracts with lighter brush, the high-HP machine finishes so fast that heavy-haul transport becomes a large share of total cost. That narrow case is the mid-size niche.

If the high-horsepower side is where you are landing, the Weiler M860A rental sheet puts weekly, monthly and turnkey pricing for that machine on a single page you can forward.

The break-even

Rough rule: 25+ acres, heavy vegetation, or any real deadline justifies high HP, and that describes most Texas clearing projects, which is why the big machines are our most requested rentals. Mid-size earns its keep in a narrower band: lighter vegetation, 10 to 25 acres, tight transport budgets.

Every project is its own math problem. Tell us acreage, vegetation, and dates at 512-601-6981 and we’ll run it with you, or start with the machine finder.

Where the extra horsepower goes is easiest to see in the published specifications. Compare the Barko, Tigercat and Weiler carriers against PrimeTech and Fecon on engine output and, more importantly, hydraulic flow delivered to the head.

Don't want to run it yourself? Ask about turnkey.

Every rental quote comes with a turnkey option: our machine, our operator, our fuel. High-HP dedicated mulching runs $4,000/day + transport (3–5+ acres/day); skid steer service is $3,000/day including transport. One call prices both so you can compare real numbers: 512-601-6981.
