Forestry Mulcher Rental in Cleburne, TX

Johnson County is limestone Grand Prairie meeting the Cross Timbers, and eastern red cedar has taken a great deal of it. Rocky ground, shallow soil and cedar thick enough to hide a fence — we rent mulchers here and run turnkey crews on the bigger tracts.

Cedar and rock in Johnson County

Cleburne sits on the Grand Prairie, where limestone comes close to the surface and soils are thin, with the Cross Timbers oak belt just to the east. Eastern red cedar is the dominant problem species and on unmanaged tracts it forms stands dense enough that you cannot see a fence from thirty feet. Down in the draws where soil is deeper you get post oak, elm and hackberry.

Rock is the operational reality here. Shallow limestone means the mulching head is working close to stone, which costs teeth and forces the operator to run slightly higher and slower than he would on sandy ground. It also means no machine is going to dig or grub — mulching takes material at the surface and that is the appropriate method for this soil anyway, since exposing thin rocky ground to erosion helps nobody.

Working rocky ground efficiently

Dense cedar on rock is where a high-horsepower dedicated machine shows its value twice over: it has the power to work through closed-canopy cedar, and its weight and undercarriage handle rough, rocky footing that punishes lighter equipment. On acreage in this county a Barko 930B or Tigercat M726G is the machine we would recommend.

The CAT 275 XE works well on scattered cedar in open pasture, on fence lines and around building sites, and it is the practical choice on small tracts. What it is not suited to is grinding through acres of closed cedar on rock — that is a job where the cheaper daily rate turns into a more expensive total because of how many days it takes.

Rent the machine, or hire it done

Shallow limestone across much of Johnson County means tooth wear is a genuine line item, and on a rental that cost lands on you. It is the main reason we suggest turnkey to first-time renters here rather than after the fact. Contractors who run these heads regularly know how to manage clearance and do fine renting monthly. The rent vs hire guide covers it.

If you want the numbers first, the cost guide breaks down what mulching runs per acre and per day, and the rent vs buy calculator shows the point where owning a machine starts to beat renting one.

Johnson County clearing questions

Meaningfully. Teeth wear faster against stone, and the operator has to run the head higher and slower to avoid it, which lowers the rate of production. On a rental, tooth wear is your cost. It is worth walking the tract and knowing where the rock is close before you commit to a number of days.

Eastern red cedar does not resprout from a cut stump, so the treatment is durable. What returns is seedlings from the seed bank and from neighbouring trees, which is a much smaller problem and much cheaper to handle on a maintenance pass every several years.

Yes, and most owners here do. The draws hold the better soil and the better trees, and a mulcher can take cedar out from around them in a way a dozer cannot. Flag the boundary of what you want left before the machine starts.

Reducing woody cover generally returns light and moisture to grass, which is why brush control is a standard range practice on this ground. How much you gain depends on your seed bank, stocking and follow-up management. Your NRCS office or county extension agent is a better source on that than we are.
