Why mulching wins on solar sites
Traditional clearing, dozers, root plows, burn piles or haul-off, moves dirt along with the vegetation. On a solar site that’s a problem, because earthwork disturbance drives stormwater compliance cost and pile-driving specs assume the grade you were permitted for.
- No burn piles, no haul-off. Vegetation becomes a mulch layer in place. No burn bans holding your schedule hostage, no hundreds of loads leaving the site, no buried-debris surprises at pile locations.
- Erosion control from day one. The mulch mat is functionally a site-wide erosion blanket, SWPPP inspectors notice, in a good way. Bare-dirt clearing creates the sediment problems mulching prevents.
- Minimal grade disturbance. Cutting vegetation at ground level preserves existing grade for racking and pile layout.
- Speed. A high-HP dedicated mulcher clears 3–5+ acres a day; multiple machines run in parallel on big arrays. A 300-acre site is weeks, not seasons.
How solar clearing actually runs
EPC contractors typically phase clearing ahead of civil: access roads and laydown first, then array blocks sequenced with pile-driving. What solar EPCs should spec
- Mulch depth: typical spec is a ground-level cut with mulch broadcast in place; confirm whether racking rows need mulch windrowed or removed.
- Stem flush height: pile-driving and trenching crews want clean, low stumps, dedicated machines cut flush; ask for it explicitly in the scope.
- Sequencing: give the mulching contractor the same block schedule as civil. Machines that hopscotch a site burn transport days.
Clearing is the first trade on site, and the first chance to fall behind. Machines with 3× production are schedule insurance that costs less than the delay.
